The Conrad Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Government completed one year in office on Wednesday.

On the occasion the government released a report card’ highlighting its initiatives, achievements and roadmap forward.

Led by the NPP, the MDA government is supported by the United Democratic Party, BJP, People’s Democratic Front, Hill State People’s Democratic Party, NCP and Independents.

The coalition government was formed on March 6 last year when Conrad Sangma, the then Tura Lok Sabha MP, took oath as chief minister.

11 other MLAs also took oath as ministers of the MDA government on the same day. Sangma was elected as MLA from South Tura constituency in the bye election later in August.

The MDA government has a total strength of 39 members including the Speaker in the 60-member Assembly. In one year, the MDA government faced several challenges that came its way.

While the issue related to the ban on coal mining is yet to be addressed, the state government is also facing pressure to come up with concrete steps to tackle alleged influx of illegal migrants.

The inter-state boundary dispute with Assam is also something the state government has failed to address in the last one year.

And in the report card released, the MDA highlighted the development push which includes work for improvement of roads, national highways, boost to tourism and water projects.

Conrad Sangma however did concede that among the challenges that his govt still has to overcome includes job creation, settling inter state border disputes and resolution of the most critical issue of rampant illegal coal mining in the state.
