Yet another case of ‘mistaken identity’ in Assam, after Sanaullah and Madhubala Mandal it is the case of Rongmala Sarkar, who has been lodged at the Korajhar detention camp for the last two years.

Things took a wrong turn after she was arrested as her husband’s name matched with another man whose wife was declared as a foreigner. A resident of Tana village in Udalguri district, Phulmala Sarkar wife of Bhupati Sarkar was identified as a foreigner in 2007.

However, the Border wing of the Assam Police mistook Rongamala’s husband to be the same person who is the husband of Phulamala. Subsequent to this, Rongamala was arrested and sent to detention camp.

Rongmala lost her 5 year old child during her period of detention. But she has now walked out free after submitting all evidences necessary to back her claim of being an Indian citizen.
