In a significant development, the Supreme Court said that both the NRC process and the panchayat polls must be completed as per the scheduled deadline in Assam.
Adding that 1.67 lakh people are required for the smooth conduct of panchayat polls in the State, the apex court ruled that the 45,000 people now involved in the NRC process should not be disturbed.
Directing that additional manpower can be arranged from the neighbouring States, the apex Court concluded that the NRC work can be supervised by one of the several additional DC’s in each district.
