The Election commission has written to the Mizoram chief secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo, expressing concerns about the boycott calls by Mizo groups against allowing Brus to vote.

In the letter, the commission has asked the state govt to make all necessary arrangement to ensure peaceful election.

The Election Commission expressed its concern regarding renewed boycott call by Mizo groups to protest against allowing displaced Bru tribals at camps in Tripura.

Around 33,000 brus have been staying in transit camps in Tripura since clashes with the Mizos in 1997. They voted in the camps through postal ballots until last year when they voted at polling stations at Kanhmun village in Mamit district of Mizoram.

Mizo groups do not want any special facilities be given to the brus who have not accepted a resettlement deal. Mizoram has been witnessing protest and violence over the Bru voting issue.

The poll panel had last year removed Chuaungo as Home Secretary following complains by Mizos that the state govt was interfering in the assembly poll process held in November last year.

Chief electoral officer S B Shashank was removed by the commission after protests against chuaungo’s removal threatened to derail the poll process last year.
