People across Assam celebrated Bhogali or Magh Bihu with much fervour and gaiety marking the end of harvesting season.

The day began with burning of ‘Bhela Ghars’ or ‘Meji’s — a traditional straw and bamboo structure and prayed for peace and well-being of their loved ones besides feasting and merry making.

Community feasting on authentic Assamese cuisine of homemade Bihu delicacies like laru-pitha, doi-sira is also a common practice during the occasion. Traditional games and sports were also organized as part of Bhogali Bihu celebrations.

Bihu festivities were witnessed in Guwahati with people lighting ‘Mejis’ praying for peace and prosperity.

People across the state in Numaligarh, Nagaon, Sadiya, Gohpur burnt ‘Bhela Ghars’ early in the morning and joined in the celebrations of Magh Bihu.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal who took part in Bhogali Bihu celebrations in Dibrugarh and Nagaon said that the government is committed to safeguard the interests of the indigenous people.

Meanwhile, Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also celebrated Magh Bihu early this morning at the Manabendra Sarma complex in Guwahati.

Gogoi, during the occasion burnt the ‘Meji’ and was accompanied by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Ripun Bora.
