In a political alignment in Meghalaya, the PDF which is a coalition partner in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance has forged a new alliance taking on board the lone NCP MLA and an Independent MLA.

The newly formed United Progressive Front (UPF) comprises of four PDF MLAs which includes state Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, Urban Affairs Minister Hamlet Dohling, Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem and Umsning MLA, Jason Mawlong.

Apart from this, NCP MLA Saleng Sangma and Independent MLA Lambor Malngiang are also part of the new alliance.

Talking to newspersons, Independent MLA, Lambor Malngiang ruled out that the UPF would be a threat to the ruling MDA. The Independent MLA asserted that the objective behind forming the new alliance was only to strengthen the MDA coalition.

Lambor Malngiang also expressed faith on the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. Besides, NCP MLA from Gambegre Saleng A Sangma also echoed similar sentiments.

It may be mentioned that in October 2017, the Hills State Peoples Democratic Party and the United Democratic Party (UDP) had joined hands that led to the creation of the Regional Democratic Alliance aiming to form the government after the 2018 assembly elections.

The Garo Hills based GNC had also extended support to the Regional Democratic Alliance. Currently, the HSPDP and UDP are coalition partners of the NPP in the ruling MDA.
